10 Hooks 10 Video Ad Hooks That Stop The Scroll
On TikTok, Reels and Facebook, people decide in about three seconds whether to keep watching. That opening — the hook — matters more than anything else in your ad. A great product with a weak hook won’t get seen. Here are ten hook types we use again and again, with example lines you can adapt.
1. The bold claim
Lead with the strongest (true) benefit. “This is the only pillow that stopped my neck pain.” Make sure you can back it up.
2. The problem callout
Name the exact frustration your buyer has. “If your dog sheds all over the sofa, watch this.” The right people stop instantly because they feel seen.
3. The surprising visual
Show something unexpected in the first frame: a silent basketball bouncing in an apartment, a product being poured in slow motion, a dramatic before-and-after. Visual hooks work even with the sound off.
4. The question
“Why does nobody talk about castor oil wraps?” A good question opens a loop the viewer wants closed.
5. “I was skeptical…”
“I didn’t think this would work, but…” Doubt makes the recommendation more believable — it’s one of the strongest UGC openers.
6. The comparison
Put your product next to the usual alternative. “$50 at the salon vs. $15 at home.” Comparisons communicate value fast.
7. The “stop doing this”
“Stop buying protein bars before you see this.” Negative hooks create urgency — use them carefully and keep them honest.
8. The unboxing or reveal
Hands opening a package build anticipation. It works especially well for gifts, gadgets and premium products — see our golf unboxing ads in the portfolio.
9. The result first
Start with the end result, then explain how you got there. “Three weeks ago my lashes looked like this…”
10. The direct audience callout
“Gym girls, this one’s for you.” or “Painters in Chicago, listen up.” Speaking to a specific group filters your audience and lifts relevance.
How to make any hook work better
- Combine text, visual and voice. Many people watch without sound, so put the hook on screen as text too.
- Get to the point in one sentence. No logo intros, no “Hi guys”.
- Test several hooks on the same ad. Keep the body identical and change only the first three seconds. It’s the cheapest way to find a winner — read how many creatives you should test.
- Match the hook to the platform. TikTok rewards fast, raw and funny; Facebook audiences often respond to clear problem-solution hooks.
