AI vs UGC AI Video Ads Vs. Real UGC: When Each One Wins
Every week a brand asks us the same question: should we switch to AI video ads, or stick with real creators? After producing thousands of ads for e-commerce brands, our honest answer is: it depends on what the ad has to do. AI and real UGC (user-generated content) are good at different jobs. Use each one where it’s strong and your ad account gets cheaper to run and easier to scale.
What we mean by “AI video ads”
An AI video ad is built partly or completely with generative tools: AI-generated scenes and product shots, AI avatars that speak to camera, AI voiceovers, or AI-written scripts. A “real UGC” ad is filmed by an actual person — usually a creator holding the product in their own kitchen, bathroom or car, talking to the camera like a friend would.
Where AI video ads win
- Speed. No shipping products to creators, no waiting for footage. An AI concept can be ready in hours, which matters when you’re testing angles every week.
- Volume for testing. You can produce ten hooks or ten backgrounds for the same message and let the ad platform find the winner — without paying for ten shoots.
- Impossible or expensive shots. A luxury bag on a Paris street at golden hour, a supplement bottle surrounded by floating ingredients, a sauna on a cliff by the sea. Cinematic product scenes like these are where AI shines.
- Products without a “face”. Jewellery, home décor, gadgets and books often sell on visuals and mood more than on a personal story. AI product shots fit them well.
Where real UGC still wins
- Trust. When someone shows a real result — clearer skin, a pet that stops shedding on the sofa, a shaker bottle in a real gym — viewers believe it. Health, beauty and supplement buyers in particular look for proof.
- Texture and demonstration. How a cream spreads, how a hair extension blends, how a gadget actually clicks into place. Real hands and real lighting still do this best.
- Talking heads with personality. A creator with a genuine reaction, a joke or a slight imperfection keeps people watching. Viewers have become good at spotting AI faces, and a fake-looking face costs you trust fast.
- Platform comfort. On TikTok and Reels, ads that look like normal posts from normal people blend into the feed. Over-polished content often gets skipped.
Quick decision guide
Ask yourself three questions before you brief your next ad:
- Does the buyer need proof that it works? If yes, lead with real UGC.
- Is the product sold on looks, mood or lifestyle? If yes, AI scenes are a strong, cost-effective option.
- Do you need many variations fast? If yes, use AI for the variations and keep one strong real-creator ad as the anchor.
The approach that usually performs best: both
Most of our best-performing ads don’t choose. They mix a real creator for the hook and the testimonial with AI-generated product scenes for the parts that would be expensive to film. A skincare ad might open with a real person’s reaction, cut to an AI close-up of the jar in a sunlit field, and end on a real before-and-after. You get human trust and production value. We explain exactly how we put these together in How We Mix AI And Real Footage In One Ad.
Common mistakes with AI ads
- Over-promising with fake results. Never use AI to show results your product can’t deliver. It’s misleading, it gets ads rejected, and it creates refund requests.
- Uncanny faces. If an AI avatar looks slightly off, viewers notice in the first second. Test it on a few people before you spend money on it.
- Ignoring platform rules. Meta and TikTok have rules for AI-generated content. Read AI Ads On Meta & TikTok: The Rules before launching.
- Same look everywhere. Generic AI visuals make different brands look identical. Your brand colours, real product and voice should still be front and centre.
The bottom line
AI video ads aren’t a replacement for real creators — they’re a second tool in the kit. Use real UGC where trust and demonstration matter, AI where visuals, speed and volume matter, and combine them when you want both. Want to see the difference?
