Statics Static Ads That Convert: 8 Rules For Image Ads
Video gets most of the attention, but static image ads quietly drive a lot of sales on Facebook and Instagram. They’re quick to make, cheap to test and easy to read in a split second. A good static can outperform an expensive video. Here are eight rules we follow when designing them.
1. One message per ad
A static ad has about a second to land. Pick the single most important idea — “better sleep”, “no more pet hair”, “3-in-1 charger” — and build the whole design around it.
2. Headline first, big and short
Your headline should be readable on a phone without zooming. Aim for a few words. “Small Pillow. Big Difference.” beats a full sentence about ergonomic foam technology.
3. Show the product clearly
The product should be instantly recognisable — ideally in use or in context, not floating alone on white. Lifestyle settings help people imagine owning it.
4. Benefits, not features
Use two or three short benefit callouts with icons or checkmarks: “Deeper sleep”, “Relieves pain”, “Free 2-day delivery”. Features belong on your product page.
5. Add proof
Star ratings, a short customer quote, “as seen in” logos or a real before-and-after (only if it’s genuine and allowed in your category). Proof turns interest into trust.
6. Make the offer impossible to miss
A price, a discount, free shipping or a limited-time deal in a clear badge. If there’s no offer, end with a strong reason to act now.
7. Design for the feed
- Use 4:5 or 1:1 for feeds and 9:16 for Stories and Reels.
- Keep text away from the edges where buttons and captions cover it.
- Use your brand colours, but make sure the ad stands out against a white or dark feed.
8. Test formats, not just colours
Try different static styles: before-and-after, comparison table, customer review card, benefit list, “us vs. them”, and a simple lifestyle photo with a headline. Different styles often win for different audiences — read how many creatives you should test.
Statics and video work best together
Many brands run statics alongside video: video to tell the story, statics to repeat the key message and offer. It’s an affordable way to keep your ads fresh. Pair them with strong video hooks and you cover every placement.
